I have wanted the Ardent Lift for so very long now and I finally have them! A laboratory grade Decarboxylator, as a science nerd the whole process from start to finish thrills me! I may bore you with the facts of it all so if you don’t want to know skip the next few paragraphs! Oh, and by the way the Ardent Lift Decarboxylator works well to activate ALL varieties of herbs for instant consumption, so not just one particular herb people! You may also decarb pollens and extracts.
So what is decarboxylation and why should I want this machine?
Year upon year of prohibition have resulted in incomplete, inaccurate, or just plain wrong information about decarboxylation – hurting not only medicinal patients, but the cannabis movement as a whole. Obviously, I am aware of the laws of this fine country, but I have encountered more and more customers who come to see me asking for advice on how to ingest their medicinal cannabis (dry flower material) that they have been legally dispensed.
There is little to no naturally occurring THC/CBD prior to decarboxylation, basically rendering the plant subpar for medicinal purposes. Inactive THCa and CBDa are prevalent in fresh Cannabis flowers and must be converted to be effective.
Freshly harvested Cannabis Flowers contain Cannabinoids. One of the most prevalent is Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa). THCa has mild anti-inflammatory and neuro-protective benefits (no psychoactive effect) but the real magic of this healing plant occurs when THCa is converted into the infamous compound THC via decarboxylation and the wonder compound CBD converts from CBDa to CBD. THC also further degrades during decarb resulting in CBN (Cannabinol).
All Cannabinoids have an extra Carboxyl ring (COOH) or group attached to their chain. Decarboxylation is the process of removing a carboxyl group (a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom) from a molecule. In the cannabis world, this process occurs when a carbon atom is removed from a carboxylic acid (namely THCa, and CBDa).
The act of decarbing removes this group resulting in the psychoactive THC.
Heat and time are required for decarboxylation to occur. This process partially begins when the plant is dried and cured (C Vault – best curing container ever!). Smoking and vaping will instantly decarb your herb due to the high temperatures used. Resulting in instant availability for absorption via the lungs. Not so for edibles though – including food items, capsules, oils, tinctures and creams.
THCa decarbs at around 105°C after around 30-35 minutes but may require longer for full decarb to occur. Heating Cannabinoids at a lower temperature for longer periods of time allows decarbing to occur whilst still maintain the integrity of your material (particularly taste – terpenes). Exceeding 150°C will compromise your medicine.
There was a time when those in the know decarbed in their oven at home. Great if you know what you are doing but also fraught with potential issues. You can also decarb in a slow cooker using cooking oils (or the Levo machine). But let’s not forget that heating your Cannabis in your oven/stove will fill your home with an intoxicating aroma you may not want others to smell. This is where the Ardent Lift Decarboxylator comes in, doing all the hard work for you without the odour control issues. No guesswork – get it right each and every time.
Terpenes are the compounds that give a plant its scent. Scientists also believe that Terpenes play a bigger role by working synergistically with other compounds within the plant to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Decarbing effectively maintains the Terpene profile resulting in a more potent end product.
One final benefit that I find particularly interesting is the sterilisation aspect of decarboxylating. Don’t want to gross you out but botanicals carry spores, microbes and insect droppings. Try having a look with a magnifying glass – you may be very surprised! Those with compromised health should try to avoid introducing potentially hazardous toxins into their medicines.
The Ardent Lift is a very sophisticated machine, don’t be fooled by its simple looks. From start to finish it expertly monitors the temperature. The Lift’s elite electronics, high-tech thermal blanket and dual sensors create the perfect decarboxylation condition each time. The internal sensors monitor temperature in real time and prompts heating cycles that fully permeate all your material. So incredibly easy too, just a one touch system – set and go.
To use: As this is an electrical device, I recommend you place your Lift in a safe area out if the way of pets and children. Once plugged in a green light will appear. Remove the black top lid and silver insert container. You may now place your herbal material directly into the silver container.
How much botanical you use is up to you, the Lift can hold up to half an ounce (14 grams), but you can decarboxylate a little or a lot – it is up to you. You do not need to grind your herb, place in as is stems and all. Please don’t overfill though.
Place the purple (silicone, I think) lid on top of the silver container and reinsert into the Lift. Replace the black cover lid. The Lift is now ready to do its magic. Press the power button towards the base of the unit (Ardent symbol) and watch the light change from green to red. Decarboxylation has begun.
So now the waiting begins, I recommend you watch an episode of Game of Thrones but maybe that’s just me! Anyway, relax and please don’t be tempted to open your Lift to have a peek inside. The whole cycle from start to finish should take you around 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours on average (2 episodes of Game of thrones!!).
TIP: Do not open unit while Red light is on, if you want to stop the process mid cycle hold the power button down for 10 seconds.
Once done the green light will reappear. Twist open the Lift, remove purple cover and remove the now decarbed material. I recommend using tongs in case you burn yourself. Your herbal material will have changed colour slightly, not as green as before but definitely not burnt.
TIP: The Ardent does not turn itself off after a full cycle and stays slightly warm. I recommend loosely timing the process on your watch (just before the 2-hour mark) and removing your material as close to the end of the cycle as possible.
So now what to do with my decarbed herb??
Well for a start you can just eat it straight away as it (weird, I know!) or place it directly into a capsule for ingestion. Infuse it into oil for cooking. You can vape or smoke it. Or maybe turn it into a topical cream or even a tea. The uses are kind of endless. Below is a link directly to the Ardent website with recipes and uses. Reading the variety of uses even surprised me a little!
