My selection of in-store books have to fulfill 2 roles before I choose to stock them. Firstly, authors that are respected in their field, reputable authors that don’t appear overnight to jump on the latest bandwagon but have worked their way through an industry that has not been particularly easy to thrive in. Secondly, the book needs to be as informative as it is interesting. Unbiased research that relies on science that is then translated into an easy-to-read guide for those thirsty for more knowledge.

This book covers all the above bases and then some. A hard cover book with 250+ pages of some of the most informative/useful information that I have come across in a while. I stopped “gifting” myself new books a while ago, but I am taking this one home today. I won’t lie to you. It wasn’t just the science that drew me in, the cover art has played a role in that decision!

TIP: Books should never take the place of talking to a trusted health professional about all aspects of your medication.

CHERYL PELLERIN

An author and independent science writer with a B.S in Science Journalism. She has been writing science for 30+ years (!) so I don’t think it is inaccurate to consider her an expert in the field. She is able to wade through vast amounts to research and to write about it in a way that educates others. She understands how to assess the validity of research and if rigorous scientific principles were adhered to. Medicinal cannabis is not her only area of expertise and this woman of science also writes about volcanology, infectious diseases, climate change, space science, biotechnology, natural disasters, military technology, HIV/AIDS, psychedelic medicine and cannabis. She has also worked on science documentaries for the Discovery channel. Are you impressed yet? I am.

TIP: Cheryl’s first book is called “Trips: How hallucinogens work in the brain”.

There is a forward in this book from Jeffrey Y. Hergenrather, M.D. Why is this important? He is a founding member of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians since 2000 and has been its president since 2008. He is considered by many as one of the most important cannabis physicians working today in the United States.

HEALING WITH CANNABIS

The premise of this book is pretty simple, Cheryl Pellerin (her words) wanted to write an informal book, filled with humour to tell the whole story about medical cannabis using colour photos and science galore. She spent over 2 years interviewing reputable researchers and reading countless papers from scientific journals to craft this highly informative resource. Colour images, interviews with cannabinoid scientists plus a selection of clinical trials/research are all provided.

TIP: This is a great book for those wanting a better comprehension of cannabinoid science regardless of your level of competence.

This book explores why and how medical marijuana helps to treat a range of illnesses. The exact mechanisms are broken down to show you how your medication works via interaction with the body’s own natural endocannabinoid system. Cannabis works upon the receptors and effects occur and wouldn’t you like to know how? CBD and THC are given their own chapters with their individual differences explored. A part I found very interesting delves into the surprising reason that evolution has conserved the endocannabinoid system over many many years. Its evolution from the earliest lifeforms to the system we have today. Thanks evolution!

A vast chunk of this book tells the positive effects that cannabis has on some of modern societies most devastating illnesses including neurodegenerative disorders, PTSD, pain, cancer and addiction. The book also shows how medical cannabis, widely available, will change the face of public health, and how nearly everyone can benefit from this versatile medicine that has a 5,000-year history of safe and effective use. But as I have mentioned many a time, medicinal marijuana is not a magic bullet and is not the answer for everyone. Information is key in understanding where you stand.
