The name Hoss Glass came on my radar a little while back and my interest was immediately piqued. Founded in 2009, Hoss Glass is a Canadian brand (Waterloo, Ontario to be specific) that crafts hand-made glassware and smoking accessories. Hoss Glass is the home of the original “build-a-bong” concept (allowing you to 100% customise your preferred experience) and offer quite a wide array of bubblers, waterpipes and pipes of all sizes, colours and thicknesses. All their glass products are made/blown at their Canadian facility and after perusing their wares I can easily say that some of their collection is pretty wild!
This Beaker is the second product out of the Hoss Range that I stock. Both are 18” tall (45cms), have a base shaped in the form of a pyramid and come packed inside a foam lined carry case with a handle but the similarities diverge from that point. There is no getting around it, this water pipe is massive and stands at just over 45cms tall. Not just tall but thick as well – 5mm thickness. The pyramid base measuring in at 13ish cms x 13ish cms. The pyramid narrows as it extends up to form the coloured neck of the piece (pink in this version and is stamped with the Hoss Glass Logo). Culminating in a thickened and rounded off mouthpiece.
TIP: 3 Pinch points sit at the base of the neck acting as ice-catchers enabling you to add ice if desired.
X2 accessories are provided in this kit, each fitting seamlessly into the other.
- X1 14mm Herb Bowl (has a side arm for easy handling and largish interior – pink in colour)
- X1 16cm Diffused downstem
The downstem of this beaker is of the diffuser variety. A fairly basic but highly effective method of diffusion/percolation. The removable 16cm long stem has 6 horizontal slits located at the very end, with 3 on each side. Your smoke will travel from the bowl and then down the stem whereby it will be forced through these 6 slits. Your one large smoke bubble is then converted into a multitude of smaller smoke bubbles allowing for a larger surface area resulting in more cooling/smoothness.
TIP: A major bonus with a (removable) Diffuser Downstem is the relative ease of cleaning that an obstacle-free water chamber provides. Particularly easy with this beaker due to its large size.
First step is to fill with water. Each person I speak to tends to have their own preferred water level so I will only recommend that you do not overfill and that you have enough water to completely cover the Diffuser Slits at the base of the downstem. If you find that you are experiencing splash back I advise lowering the amount of water within to match your depths of inhalation.
Roughly chop/grind up your material and place within the bowl. Don’t overpack. Light whilst inhaling.
You have options when cleaning glassware, you can either use one of the myriad of prepackaged cleaning solutions (ensure you rinse thoroughly to ensure no chemicals remain) or you can use my favourite method of Isopropyl Alcohol blended with Rock Salt (check out Higher Standards Salt Rox). The 2 work perfectly together to dissolve and abrade resins/gunk away. This method works most effectively when you plug up all openings and then shaking the solution within.
As for the flower bowl/downstem, you can soak them in Isopropyl or wash with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before reusing.
