Tsubota Pearl is one of those rare brands that has really stood the test of time. A Japanese brand specialising in metal and leather work that was founded over 60 years ago in 1952. From that day forward till today they have had only one goal in mind – to pay great attention to both originality and quality. All components are made within specialised workshops in and around the Asakusa area of Tokyo (AKA downtown Tokyo).
Hiroshi Tsubota was the man that started it all (Tsubota Seisakusho) subsequently choosing the name “Pearl” after the world’s first cultured pearl was invented in Japan. Hence the name Tsubota Pearl was born. Over the years a steady stream of incredibly beautiful products were crafted including lighters, cigarette cases, cigar cutters, business card holders, perfume roll-on atomizers, pill boxes, mirrors, optical cases, pens and money clips. Classic designs that never go out of style and are sold world wide.
Vintage is a word that springs to mind with this series of lighters. They have the look of a lighter from days of old, an old-fashioned style of lighter where you will find a flint, a wick and lighter fluid (zippo style) is used to refill. Each lighter has an “All American” image printed on the front and back of the brass body. Vivid and intricate artwork that I can really admire. The name of this lighter kind of confused me though, why is it called Automatic? My first thought was maybe they called it automatic as they have used the images of American Vintage cars on a few models but as I’m pretty sure they were all manuals so my theory doesn’t really hold up. Whatever the reason these are seriously cool lighters, the kind that the Fonz would use in Happy Days.
Squarish in shape with a lever along the top that you press down on to ignite. The depressed lever will raise the cap that covers the flame initiating the flint which in turn ignites the wick providing a flame. The Automatic lighter uses standard lighter fluid to fill (zippo style).
Probably don’t need to teach you how to use a lighter! Push down on the longer silver lever at the top of the lighter. Release your thumb to extinguish.
TIP: The flame does not self-extinguish so please ensure you extinguish after use. Closing the cap should suffice.
The filling port is accessed via the base of the lighter so you will need to hold it upside down to refill. Along the base you will see 2 inlaid screws. The larger one is the fluid inlet screw whilst the smaller one allows you to change your flint when that time arises. Unscrew the fluid inlet and using the included filling cup/funnel to slowly fill (one cup only). Please do not overfill. Once done rescrew.
TIP: Wash hands thoroughly and wipe your lighter down thoroughly before use.
Over time you will need to replace the flint, best replaced when at 1/3rd of original size. To access you will need to unscrew the flint screw located along the base (smaller screw). Remove the old flint and install a fresh one.
Wick should stand at around 4mm. Over time the wick will become shorter and black at this stage it is advisable to pull up on the wick (gently) with a pair of tweezers until a clean segment appears. Trim to 4mm.
