Tsubota Pearl is one of those rare brands that has really stood the test of time. A Japanese brand specialising in metal and leather work that was founded over 60 years ago in 1952. From that day forward till today they have had only one goal in mind – to pay great attention to both originality and quality. All components are made within specialised workshops in and around the Asakusa area of Tokyo (AKA downtown Tokyo).
Hiroshi Tsubota was the man that started it all (Tsubota Seisakusho) subsequently choosing the name “Pearl” after the world’s first cultured pearl was invented in Japan. Hence the name Tsubota Pearl was born. Over the years a steady stream of incredibly beautiful products were crafted including lighters, cigarette cases, cigar cutters, business card holders, perfume roll-on atomizers, pill boxes, mirrors, optical cases, pens and money clips. Classic designs that never go out of style and are sold world wide.
Let’s start with the name – Paper Lighter, an interesting name to give a lighter. Is it because it can be used to light paper (which it obviously can)? Or maybe it is made of paper (wouldn’t that be interesting?). The actual reason is related to the slimness of this lighter, crafted to be as slim a lighter as you can possibly get. As slim as a piece of paper, hence the name. I am currently holding one and I can attest to the slim profile, but I will be honest it is definitely way thicker than any piece of paper I have encountered! Regardless this is such a beautiful lighter to hold and use, a true collector’s item.
Made from Brass the Paper Lighter is refillable and uses standard Butane Gas. An old-fashioned style lighter where a flint is used to ignite. These wicks need to be replaced regularly. You can also adjust the height of the single flame as desired.
Probably don’t need to teach you how to use a lighter! Flick up the top cap and turn the flint wheel to ignite the wick. Flame adjustment is accessible via the wheel located towards the top of the lighter (need to pull out the inner lighter from the casing to access the wheel). height should not exceed 2-3cms.
TIP: The flame does not self-extinguish so please ensure you extinguish after use.
Before filling/refilling ensure that the flame height is at a minimum. Gently pull out the inner lighter from the outer casing and hold upside down and straight whilst refilling. The filling port is located at the base next to the protruding flint screw. Insert the nozzle of your Butane canister into the base refilling valve. It will automatically provide a sufficient amount to the lighter tank and should only take a few seconds. Remove nozzle from valve and wait a few minutes to allow gas and lighter to reach room temperature before usage.
TIP: Wash hands thoroughly and wipe your lighter down thoroughly before use.
Over time you will need to replace the flint, best replaced when at 1/3rd of original size. To access unscrew the flint screw, remove old flint and replace with a new one. Replace the flint screw.
