Lately I have been specifically focusing on increasing books that are based around the therapeutic usage of medicinal herbs, books that intend to educate in an unbiased manner. The growth of prescribed medicinal marijuana in Australia has opened the floodgates with more and more of my customers wanting to play an active role in their treatments. Medicinal cannabis is not a magic bullet though and will not heal/treat all maladies regardless of what some people may tell you. This is why well-researched books written by qualified individuals, with no hidden motives are an important tool to have in ones arsenal.
TIP: Books should never take the place of talking to a trusted health professional about all aspects of your medication.
FRANJO GROTENHERMEN, M.D.
Recognised as an expert in the therapeutic use of cannabinoids in a myriad of conditions and has written many respected articles and books on the topic. A German doctor (practicing physician) that has studies marijuana as a medicine extensively from a scientific perspective.
He is the chairman of the German Association for Cannabis as Medicine (ACM). Some of his best work was in shaping cannabis policy in and outside of Germany, including;
- The medicinal use of cannabis/cannabinoids
- Potential impacts of THC in hemp foods
- Cannabis and driving
He has published articles on all of the above topics in German, English and Spanish helping to educate more and more health professionals. We need more medical professionals like this man, and only then will cannabis be viewed as the medicine that it has always been.
This book approaches the topic from a scientific perspective, exploring the biochemistry of cannabinoids and how they react with the human body’s own endo-cannabinoid system. Cannabinoid receptors and naturally occurring cannabinoids (yes, your body makes them too!) are explained too. Cannabis-derived medications are discussed (drobinol, nabilone and nabiximols – may not be applicable in Australia though as we use dry flower predominantly) with methods of administration/usage touched upon.
This book is not based on personal opinion but on numerous research studies as well as the author’s years of experience in treating patients legally with cannabis is Germany. He breaks down this wonder herb into the usage of CBD as well as THC therapeutically and where each may be more suitable. Safety is a big component of this book with a complete discussion on safe usage, possible side effects, contraindications, precautions, pregnancy and chemotherapy usage. Research is sited to confirm that cannabis is one of the least toxic substances on earth. I agree with this assertion but also believe that all medication should be taken seriously, and all have the potential to cause “harm”.
